U.S. Supplies Military Equipment to Support Nigeria’s Fight Against Terrorism

Nigeria’s fight against terrorism received support yesterday as the United States delivered military equipment to the country.

According to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the supplies were delivered in Abuja to support Nigeria’s ongoing security operations against terrorists and other armed groups. AFRICOM said the delivery shows the strong security partnership between Nigeria and the United States.

In a post on its official X account, AFRICOM stated that the military supplies were meant to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts. However, it did not disclose the exact items delivered.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, recently visited the United States to speed up the delivery of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters being supplied by Bell Textron, a U.S.-based company. The AH-1Z is a modern combat helicopter equipped with advanced weapons and night-fighting capabilities.

The delivery of military equipment follows U.S. airstrikes carried out on December 24 against terrorist groups in Northwest Nigeria. The strikes, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian military, targeted ISIS-linked fighters in Jabo, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

AFRICOM confirmed that the strikes were carried out at the request of Nigerian authorities. Reports indicate that a Lakurawa terrorist camp was destroyed during the operation, with several militants believed to have been killed.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the airstrikes were part of structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States. The ministry noted that the cooperation involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and support in line with international law and respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The government also stressed that all counter-terrorism operations are aimed at protecting civilians, preserving national unity, and respecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

AFRICOM is one of the U.S. Department of Defense’s combat commands. It is headquartered in Germany and oversees U.S. military operations and partnerships across Africa, excluding Egypt.
